Description
of Graduate Programs
(Beginning
January 2005, a new cohort of teachers will begin the
program
each January and move through the courses as a group).
Graduate
Certificate Program
Educational
professionals wishing to improve their knowledge and
teaching
skills in Earth/Space Science may pursue the "Graduate
Certificate in Earth/Space Science", for which 18 credits
are required. This two-year program is open to elementary,
middle, and
senior high school teachers. Content and methodology are
integrated in all the courses, which reflect the Maryland
State Department of Education's Outcomes and Core Learning
goals, the American Association for the Advancement of
Science's
K-12 Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and the National
Academy of Science's K-12 Standards. Courses required
for the certificate
are:

886.631 Understanding and Teaching Earth Observations from
Space
886.632 Understanding and Teaching the Solar System
886.633 Understanding and Teaching Stars, Galaxies, and
Beyond
886.634 Understanding and Teaching Earth's Weather and
Climate
886.811 Internship in Earth/Space Science
Master's
Degree Program
Educational
professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills
in Earth/Space Science and also obtain an advanced degree
may pursue the degree "Master of Science in Education:
Educational Studies with Concentration in Earth/Space Science",
for which 33 credits are required. This course is open to
elementary, middle, and senior high school teachers. Content
and methodology are integrated in all the earth/space science
courses, which reflect the Maryland State Department of
Education's Outcomes and Core Learning goals, the American
Association for the Advancement of Science's K-12
Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and the National Academy
of Science's K-12 Standards. In addition to the courses
required for the Certificate in Earth/Space Science, participants
in the master's degree program complete the following:

Electives (six credits to be determined with the consent
of the program advisor) After the required earth/space
science courses are completed, individual schedules are
developed in consultation with the JHU program advisor to
include the remaining required courses.
