If you are interested in a "tailor-made" support system to
meet the requirements related to Core Learning Goal 1 (Skills
and Processes) and Core Learning Goal 2 (Earth/Space Science);
becoming a systemic change agent in science and math education;
developing professionally; and reaching out to others statewide,
then participation in the 1998 Space Science Internship
Program (SSIP) is for you.
SSIP is a three-phase Johns Hopkins graduate level program
that integrates the newly-adopted Maryland high school core
learning goals for science and skills and processes with
specifically-designed course content to promote the Maryland
School Performance and Assessment Program goals and objectives.
The program includes two Johns Hopkins University graduate
courses "Understanding and Teaching
the Solar System" (881.632) and "Understanding
and Teaching Earth Observations from Space" (881.631),
and an eight-week summer research internship.
SSIP provides teachers with:
- an
introduction to the solar system
- an
awareness of NASA's current science missions
- tested
hands-on math and science demonstrations and experiments
that reflect course content for immediate classroom application
- access
to scientists from Space Grant member institutions (statewide,
nationally and internationally), as well as NASA teacher
resources
- an
understanding of the utilization of direct satellite readout
and space-based remote sensing and Internet navigation
as multidisciplinary teaching tools
- a
network of skilled teachers who are committed to the academic
success of their students as well as their own professional
development
