Mars
Central Project at Port Discovery Children's Museum
As
part of the Mars Central Project at Port Discovery Children's
Museum in Baltimore, funding supported an activity entitled
"Action Contraptions." Using real tools and all kinds of
materials, children were challenged to design a Mars rover
in the R&D DreamLab. A total of 949 students from Maryland
MESA schools in Baltimore City and rural Washington County
attended this event. Funding also allowed over 600 disabled
children and their chaperones for a special "Accessibility
Day."
Hubble Live Interactive Teleconference
MSGC
and the Maryland Science Center conducted a live interactive
teleconference for 23 elementary and secondary teachers
on Thursday, April 27. The program which was held at four
interactive sites and three view only sites highlighted
Hubble's 10 years of discoveries, classroom activities and
professional development opportunities offered by MSGC.
Baltimore City Professional Day
The
overall purpose of this two-day event, conducted by Baltimore
City's Board of Education on September 29 & 30, 2000,
was to provide in-service teachers with new information
and ideas for enhancing student academic development during
this new school year. The Maryland Space Grant Consortium,
in conjunction with Towson University Center for Geographic
Information Sciences, one of its state Space Grant partners,
was given the opportunity to help one of its NASA/Raytheon
Synergy Project-trained teachers demonstrate the use of
Global Positioning System units in collecting ground truth
data for this project. Approximately 25 teachers attended
the two sessions during which the use of this unit was demonstrated.
MSGC/GLOBE/GREEN Collaboration
There
are certain environmental education parallels among the
three groups, especially in areas of Hydrology, Land Cover,
and Atmosphere. The three groups are exploring the different
protocols used by each, with the intent to merge common
areas of interest, especially where school activities compliment
each other (such as measurements of hydrologic parameters)
and expand the number of schools participating in each program
without imposing a duplication of effort on the part of
the teachers.
Governor's Math and Science Academy
Assistance
is provided by MSGC for recruitment of speakers among its
affiliate members to address middle and high school teacher
participants of the Academy.
